Orange County EMS WEEK supports the Revlon Run/Walk For Cancer

When: Saturday, - May 13, 2006
Mother’s Day Weekend
Time: 7:00 am - 12 noon
Where: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at Exposition Park

Orange County EMS WEEK has been successful because of our great partnerships. By pulling our resources together, we have been able to educate our communities on ways to be healthy and safe. However, when one of our "partners" needs a hand, our EMS WEEK team comes together and provides a little hope and inspiration. With that being said, the Orange County EMS WEEK team would like to share these heartfelt letters with you from one of our EMS WEEK Friends, Mr. Steve Wood, Battalion Chief from the City of Brea Fire Department.

Hello:

We need your help supporting a cause that has possibly impacted you, your family, friends, or coworkers.

My name is Steve Wood and I am a Battalion Chief with the Brea Fire Department and my wife Debbi is currently battling her second bout of breast cancer which has now spread into her bones.

This year, on Saturday, May 13th, my family and I will be participating in the Revlon Run/Walk for Cancer. This will be our fourth trip to the Walk.

The reason for my sharing this with you is that when we walk, my daughter, a junior in high school, decided she would make pink ribbon pins and put people's names on the ribbons.

What we are looking for is names of people who have survived breast cancer, going through it now, and those who have succumbed to it.

We will make a ribbon for each name that is given to us and then when the walk is done, we will send the ribbon back to the person who originally requested it.

In addition to getting names for ribbons, we are looking for donations for the walk. You can be part of Los Angeles' biggest fundraiser for women's cancers - distributing nearly $37 million over the past 12 years.

Over 50,000 men, women and children will converge at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, May 13th - Mother's Day weekend in an amazing display of support for the women in our lives.

Please share with us the continued hope provided by medical breakthroughs funded from Run/Walk proceeds.

Those that participate at this event witness courage as thousands of survivors cross the finish line, and feel the strength as Los Angeles unites to find a cure for women's cancers.

Whether you are a survivor celebrating life, a daughter supporting her mother, a husband honoring his wife, or sisters and friends joining together, you'll be glad you joined this important fight against women's cancers.

Donations can be made directly to the following website: http://www.revlonrunwalk.com/la/html.main/home.html  or inquiries can be sent to my wife at dminerwood@adelphia.net.

Checks should be made to the Revlon Run/Walk for Cancer, and are 100% tax deductible.

If you would like to walk with us, we would love to have you there with us!

Our goal is to raise over $2,000, but the most important thing is get as many ribbons (names) as we can.

Thank you!!!

My True Companion
By Steve Wood

Let me introduce you to my true companion, my wife Debbi. We have been married for over twenty years, which is just about as long as I have been in the fire service. We have been blessed with three healthy children (one son and two daughters) who currently range in age from eight to nineteen. Debbi is my best friend, my better half, a true "rock", with an incredible wit andSteve Wood and family photo zest for life!

Five years ago Debbi was diagnosed with breast cancer which certainly rocked my world! Imagine the person I count on for support, was now going to be in the fight of our lives! Locating an oncologist within our health plan that could help us chart a course to beat this cancer was the highest priority for me! I have never felt so helpless because I could not help her in the ways I was use to. Debbi's "failure is not an option" attitude was so astonishing. She was now emotionally supporting me, our friends and family!

The fight began with several rounds of chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, several radiation sessions, and a hysterectomy. We had hoped we had beat this cancer, but just about six months ago we learned her cancer had returned to several areas in her body and a new aggressive fight was now going to be waged to slow or stop this cancer one more time.

Words cannot express how I now felt! Debbi is so much a part of my life that I do worry, and will always worry about her. I cannot tell you how often I sit with tears, confused, nervous, worried and scared looking for the right things to say and do that truly express my feelings for her! With all my heart I took her as my wife. I have always loved her through the good and the bad, through the joy and the sorrow. I will continue to be understanding and trusting and I know together we will face all of life's experiences sharing one another's dreams and goals. Debbi is not only my "true companion" but also my hero!

We were blessed to have so many friends who continue to be there for every step of this journey. I am thankful for all the incredible home-cooked meals for my family, friends who have taken Debbi to and from chemotherapy, emotional and spiritual support, picking kids up after school, and so many other countless ways of assisting us in so many ways that truly express a special bond and love for a friend, collage, parent, fire service family member, in our time of need!

For those who are experiencing a similar situation with a spouse, family members, or friend, remember you don't have to be alone! The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is there for you, so don't be afraid to reach out and ask for support and become a part of the network!

I know I have so much to learn, but together we can search for answers and provide the necessary support to those in need and each other.
