Vaccination Activity
The Health Care Agency continues to work with the
California Department of Public Health to distribute vaccine in
response to the 2009 H1N1 Influenza. This is in coordination with
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which has
arranged for the production of an estimated 195 million doses of
vaccine before the end of the year.
The CDC has acknowledged that vaccine delays are
more significant than anticipated. Vaccine availability across the
country falls far short of the need and may not be readily available
until after the peak of the season. Approximately 340,000 doses of
vaccine have been shipped by the federal government to providers in
Orange County thus far - less than 20% of what is needed to meet the
needs of the estimated 1.6 million residents that are in the five
CDC target groups:
-
Pregnant women
-
Children and young adults 6 months to 24 years
of age
-
Health care workers
-
Adults to age 64 with underlying health
conditions
-
Caregivers of infants younger than six months
of age
The shortage of vaccine means that health care
workers and individuals at highest risk for serious illness have not
been able to receive vaccinations. To reach these individuals, the
Health Care Agency is utilizing the small amount of vaccine received
by Public Health in the following ways:
-
The Health Care Agency is providing vaccine to
community health care providers (particularly hospitals,
obstetricians and pediatricians) to the CDC priority
populations.
-
The Agency is providing an appointment-only
clinic for pregnant women and is establishing additional
vaccination opportunities for children with underlying health
conditions.
-
School-based vaccination clinics are being
supported for children with underlying health conditions.
-
Additional clinics and strategies will be
employed when additional vaccine is available.
The good news is that there has been an increase
in shipments to private healthcare providers since November 9th. We
encourage the public to check with their provider about the
availability of vaccine. Health care providers are still able to
order FREE H1N1 vaccine through the California Department of Public
Health at www.calpanflu.org.
While the community awaits additional vaccine, it is important to
take simple steps to reduce transmission and illness:
-
Cover your cough and sneeze with tissue, a
sleeve or your elbow
-
Wash hands frequently and use alcohol based
hand sanitizers
-
Stay home if you are ill
Individuals at risk of medical complications
should notify their health care provider if they become ill and seek
treatment early if directed.
