Cal-Learn Program
Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health
Cal-Learn is a program that works with
pregnant and parenting teenagers who receive welfare assistance
through the program CalWORKs. Cal-Learn helps teen parents stay
in school and be less dependent on long-term welfare.
Who is eligible?
Teens under 19 years of age who are receiving Cal-Works Welfare assistance and who do not have a high school diploma or equivalent are required to participate in Cal-Learn Program. They can choose to continue participating in the program until age 20.
How the program works
All teens are assigned social workers who will
work with them one-on-one. Teens are expected to stay in school
and maintain at least a 1.0 GPA. Doing well in school qualifies
teens for extra money in addition to their CalWORKS assistance.
Doing poorly in school results in money taken out of the CalWORKS
assistance.
During participation in Cal-Learn, child care,
transportation, and other necessary costs will be paid by the
program to help the participant attend school. The social worker
will also work with the participant on other issues that may be
appropriate such as health care, parenting skills, birth control,
independent living skills, and other areas.
Participants who finish high school or
equivalent before age 20 will receive an extra monetary bonus, and
will enter the Welfare to Work (WTW) Program to continue receiving
services that will promote independence.
