Licensing Overview
Orange County Emergency Medical Services
EMT Licensing Information
Emergency Medical Technician certificate
or license authorizes an individual to practice as an EMT in the
state of California. An EMT certificate is required to work on
an ambulance in Orange County (see ambulance attendant license
below), and may be required in other settings such as first aid providers,
emergency room technicians, fire departments and other settings.
If you have an EMT certificate issued in the state of California
then you do not need an Orange County EMT certificate, but to
work on an ambulance you must have an Orange County Ambulance
Attendant license, in addition to your EMT certificate.
If you are from another state, and you have a National Registry
EMT certificate then you may use that to apply for an Orange County EMT certificate
with no further testing. If you have an EMT certificate from another
state, but not a National Registry card, then you must take the
National Registry examination.
Anyone applying for an Orange County EMT certificate must clear
the Department of Justice background check. Individuals with a
California EMT certificate not issued in Orange County must have
an ambulance attendant license and complete a Department of
Justice background check in order to work on an ambulance in
Orange County.
