Authorization as an MICN is valid for two years. Requirements to obtain and maintain this authorization
include sponsorship by and continued employment at an Orange County designated Base Hospital, observation of field personnel,
continuing education specific to EMS issues, Base radio preceptorship, completion of an OCEMS approved training program,
and achievement of a passing score of 80% on the OCEMS Authorization exam.
Recommendation for authorization by the Base Hospital
Coordinator and/or Emergency Department Nursing Supervisor and
the Base Hospital Physician.
Completion of the OCEMS MICN Authorizing exam with a minimum
passing score of 80%
Completion of the OCEMS Application
Complete
and sign a statement attesting that the applicant is not
precluded from authorization for any of the reasons defined in
Section 1798.200 of the California Health and
Safety Code.
Complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of continuing education (CE) every two (2) years from an approved
CE Provider. At least 50% (15 hours) must be in topics directly related to prehospital care issues or
Emergency medicine. This may include but is not limited to:
Periodic training
sessions or structured clinical experience in
knowledge and skills to include advanced airway
management and cardiac resuscitation
Organized field
care audits of patient care records
Courses or
training relating to direct prehospital
emergency medical care, including medical
treatment and/or management of specific patients
(e.g., burn care, assessment, Advanced Cardiac
Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support, and
orientation programs with patient care contact
Courses or
training related to indirect patient care or
medical operations (CQI, cultural diversity,
grief support, or critical incident stress
debriefing), not to exceed six (6) hours in a
licensure cycle
Media based
and/or serial productions (e.g., films, videos,
audiotape programs, magazine articles offered
for CE credits, home study, computer simulations
or interactive computer modules), not to exceed
six (6) hours in a licensure cycle
Service as an
instructor for an approved CE course or an
approved EMT course, not to exceed six (6) hours
in a licensure cycle
Attendance at
OCEMS approved mandatory in-services (or
alternative at base hospital coordinators’
discretion with OCEMS approval).
