2005 Holiday Heroes Commended

CYS Project Together and Providence Community Services have been fortunate to be the recipients of numerous in-kind and monetary donations throughout 2005. These donations helped to provide many clients with the opportunity to attend summer camp, participate in sports programs, start school with a new backpack or ride a brand new bicycle. However, during the month of December, the true spirit of giving demonstrated by several local businesses, individuals and a high school, was overwhelming. These people opened their hearts to donate gifts and food certificates to clients and their families who were facing a financially bleak holiday. The following is a brief account of a few of the "heroes" who helped to make the season brighter for many.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Construction Purchasing Association (CPA) of Southern California selected CYS-Project Together as the recipient of its annual "Gift for an Angel" holiday program. As a result, this benevolent organization presented CYS and CYS contract clients with a generous array of holiday gifts, clothing, and gift cards. This year, 250 clients had their special holiday wishes fulfilled thanks to the enormous generosity of the CPA members. Packages filled with gameboys, cd players, sports equipment, clothing, bicycles, scooters and much more were delivered to the CYS-PT main office where they were sorted for distribution to the various clinics, and ultimately to the client's parent or guardian so they could be opened Christmas Day.

The "elves" of Hewitt and Associates in Newport Beach, granted the holiday wishes of three CYS families in need. Playing Santa's helper for the fourth year, Janice McDonell, along with her Hewitt helpers, supplied toys, clothing, bikes, games, and gift and grocery store certificates to these "adopted" families, including one family of 10.

Providence Community Services expanded its Holiday Angel Tag program this season with 515 children receiving at least two gifts each, thanks to the generous donations provided by the employees and customers of American Home Mortgage, Anthony B. Salon, Brooks America Mortgage, California Cushion, CAMFT, Curves for Women, Davidson Staffing, Farmers Insurance, First Security Thrift, Huggy Bear Productions, Integrium, LA Fitness, LA International Church of Christ, Moo Go Gong Associates, North Orange County Escrow, O.C. Woodworkers Association, PDSA, Providence Community Services, Selman Chevrolet, Tarsadia Hotels, UCLA-NICU and Welch & Schaffner.

Elks Create Happy Holiday for Mentees

Presents, Santa, lots of pizza and laughter were the perfect ingredients to create a memorable holiday party for CYS-Project Together and Providence Community Services mentees, mentors and clients last December 10. For the fifth consecutive year, dedicated and caring members and volunteers of the Huntington Beach Elks Lodge No. 1959, sponsored this delightful Christmas party. The youthful attendees, totaling nearly 100, were treated to an afternoon filled with nonstop activities, entertainment, delicious food and a visit from the man of the hour, Santa.

Special thanks for this wonderful day of fun goes to Nancy Bresnan, a mentor with Providence Community Services, who with her husband Jim co-chaired the event. Other Elk members assisting with the party included Mary Rose Skolyan, Bonnie LaVigne, Bill and Addie Collier, the "Cinderella's" who wrapped the gifts, Steve Gibbs, and Santa Tony. A special thank you also goes to What-A-Lot-of-Pizza, donors of the pizza served at the party.

Through their "Dear Santa" program, Los Alamitos High School's Interact and Key Club students have continued their tradition of giving for a seventh consecutive year. Students conducted a school-wide holiday gift collection campaign and collected toys, games and clothing for 38 clients.

The Fullerton Women's Golf Club, coordinated by Shirley Pigman, "adopted" three CYS families from the Fullerton area. The donation of numerous gifts provided much needed assistance to parents and guardians who, due to difficult circumstances, were unable to provide for their children this year.

Employees of Global Beach, Inc. in Irvine, led by Wellesley Sommerfeld, pooled their resources to adopt a family and provide them with a memorable holiday.

Individual donors, Melissa Almon and David Natali, each helped a family again this year with their donations of holiday gifts and gift cards.

The staff of Children and Youth Services, along with CYS contract agencies, would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the donors who have helped to enrich the lives of clients and their families during the 2005 holiday season. Please see page 3 for the entire listing of 2005 CYS Project Together and Providence Community Services donors.

No Gutter Balls for this Group

It was just days before Halloween, and CYS-PT and Providence Community Service mentors and mentees were filled with a spirit of tricking, treating and bowling. The group arrived at Tustin Lanes on a Saturday last October, ready for a morning of strikes, spares, pizza and sweet treats. Mentor Margo Jolly, with assistance from her mentee, provided a backdrop of dark, looming balloon people stationed around the alley.

Thanks to bumpers placed on each lane, the mentees (and some mentors) were able to experience victory, and all returned home with special prizes, Halloween candy and a "spooky" balloon.
