WIC participants receive monthly food checks for specific foods prescribed to meet their individual needs. WIC foods are high in protein, iron and vitamins A and C. Examples of such foods are milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, dried beans, iron fortified cereal, 100% juice high in vitamin C and iron-fortified infant formula. Food checks are redeemed at contracted local grocery stores and pharmacies.
Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program In addition to receiving WIC checks, participants have the opportunity to receive additional checks to redeem at WIC-authorized Certified Farmers’ Markets to buy locally-grown fresh fruit and vegetables. The checks are given out in the summer months in limited amounts to selected WIC sites.
