The County of Orange Health Care Agency Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) will host a Youth Art Exhibition on March 6, 2001 at the Orange County Department of Education located at 200 Kalmus Drive, Room D1002, in Costa Mesa, from 4-6 p.m. The exhibition will showcase a variety of clever anti-tobacco artwork created local Orange County youth. Over 20 young artists featured in the exhibition developed their work through TUPP’s "Tune Out Tobacco" project. Several of the pieces that will be on display will be actual products that were placed and shown in the community such as a billboard, a movie slide and a produced video Public Service Announcement. The " Tune Out Tobacco" project helps youth (grades 6 through 12) counter the positive portrayal of tobacco in movies, television, billboards, magazines and window advertisements. The tobacco industry spends more than $16 million each day in the United States (or $11,000 a minute) on advertising and special promotions. By participating in the "Tune Out Tobacco" project, youth have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the entertainment and advertising industries through the development of creative and innovative media products. The mission of the Tobacco Use Prevention Program is to reduce tobacco use and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in Orange County by mobilizing a broad-based network of community organizations and committed individuals. TUPP provides services to the residents of the County through youth, community service and public policy programs. If you would like more information on the art exhibition or how to get involved please call Barbara Soeffner at (714) 834-3232. # # #
