Wong Named Director of Environmental Health

(Santa Ana) – A 24-year veteran of the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Environmental Health Division, Steven K. Wong, REHS, MPH, has been named the division’s new Director.

The appointment of Wong as Director of Environmental Health was announced by Mike Spurgeon, Health Care Agency (HCA) Deputy Agency Director/Regulatory Health Services. "In addition to Steven’s excellent managerial skills, he brings to the position a wealth of experience, dedication and professionalism developed during his 24 years of County service," stated Spurgeon. Wong called his selection as Director a tremendous honor. "We have a terrific team at Environmental Health and it is a great pleasure to work with many talented professionals who are dedicated to achieving our mission," Wong said.

Wong has served as the Interim Director of Environmental Health since November 2000 and as Assistant Director since 1985. His career with Orange County began in 1977 as an Environmental Health Specialist and he later served as manager of the Hazardous Waste Program. Among his many career accomplishments, Wong was selected the California Environmental Health Specialist of the Year in 1983 and was included in the Who’s Who Environmental Registry in 1994. He has also served as Chairman of the Hazardous Waste Technical Advisory and Training Committees for the California Conference of Directors of Environmental Health.

Originally from Hong Kong, Wong immigrated with his family to the United States in 1969. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health from California State University, Los Angeles and his Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Management from the University of California, Los Angeles.

HCA Environmental Health works to ensure a healthful environment for Orange County residents, workers and visitors through pollution prevention, food protection, water quality, pool safety and housing and institutions programs.
