Workshop Focuses on Growing Senior Health Problem

(Irvine) – The abuse or misuse of medications, which may affect as many as one out of every six older adults, will be the subject of a September 28th workshop for healthcare professionals to be held at the Irvine Civic Center Auditorium.

The program, entitled "Medication Abuse and Misuse Among Older Adults," is the final session in a series of workshops designed to improve the clinical skills of healthcare and senior service providers. Americans 65 years of age and older consume more prescribed and over-the-counter medications than any other age group. As this age group increases in size, healthcare professionals are concerned about the dangers of medication abuse and misuse.

Presenters for the workshop will include Solomon Liao, M.D., a geriatric medicine specialist at UC Irvine Medical Center, and Dan Ketchum, R.Ph., a pharmacist for the Orange County Health Care Agency Older Adult Services.

Workshop registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the program scheduled for 9 a.m.-12 Noon. The workshop is sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Orange County (MHA), the UC Irvine Academic Geriatric Resource Center, the County of Orange Health Care Agency Older Adult Services and the City of Irvine. Registration information is available from MHA by calling (714) 547-7559 or on-line at www.ochealthinfo.com/behavioral/amhs. Continuing education hours are available for nurses, licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and residential care facility administrators.
