First Spanish-Language Women’s Health Conference Debuts In Orange County
(Santa Ana) – Orange County unveils its first ever Spanish-language women’s conference, “Celebrando la Mujer (Celebrating Womanhood)” on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Santa Ana College located at 1530 W. 17th Street in Santa Ana. This free event aims to educate Orange County Latina women about breast and cervical cancer and the importance of early detection.
Alarming national statistics show that Latinas are more likely than most other ethnic groups to be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer and are reported as having the highest cervical cancer incidence in California. The conference, hosted by the Latina Breast Health Task Force of the Orange County Breast Cancer Partnership, will educate attendees about their own bodies, effects and detection of breast and cervical cancer and what health programs are available to assist uninsured women.
The event includes an exemplary line-up of nationally recognized health leaders and speakers and interactive workshops on breast and gynecological health featuring Dora Rodriguez, a breast cancer survivor who initiated the first support groups in Spanish for Orange County Latinas. Event attendees will have the opportunity to learn first-hand from the speakers and workshops about cancer detection and prevention as a means to leading a healthy lifestyle. In closing the conference, America Bracho, a recognized expert in Latina Health will provide participants with an inspirational keynote address.
The conference is open to all members of the community and offers free childcare for children over the age of five as well as free transportation to and from certain sites. For more information about the free conference or to register, please call (800) 298-0800.
The Orange County Breast Cancer Partnership promotes free clinical breast exams, mammograms and diagnostic services to low-income, medically uninsured Orange County women to detect breast cancer early, when it can be successfully treated.
