Research has shown that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than with another person. To encourage reading and literacy among youth, Orange County Animal Care Services (ACS) and Borders Books will team together with Professor Milo, a registered canine member of Therapy Dogs International (TDI) who was also adopted from ACS. Owned by Gail Zukow of San Juan Capistrano, the Australian Cattle Dog helps children feel confident and relaxed and, therefore, have more fun reading books. "We're thrilled about this event because it provides a wonderful opportunity to help children learn to read in an environment where they feel comfortable,” said Dr. Julie Ryan Johnson of Orange County Animal Care Services. “I encourage everyone to spread the word about this important event. Together, we can all help put an end to illiteracy in our community.” In addition to “Storytime with Professor Milo,” on-site pet adoptions will take place from noon to 3 p.m. ACS staff and volunteers will be on hand to distribute materials and answer questions on responsible pet care and training. For more information about the reading event or to view photos of available pets for adoption, visit Orange County Animal Care Services’ Web site at www.ocpetinfo.com.
