Youth Created Anti-Tobacco Posters Unveiled

(Santa Ana) – The tobacco industry spends an alarming $16 million each day (or $11,000 a minute) on advertising and special promotions.  To counter the related negative effects, the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) joins community leaders, educators and students on Thursday, April 24 from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. in the city of San Clemente for the unveiling of student-created anti-tobacco posters.

The unveiling will take place at the Krikorian Movie Theatre located at 641 Camino De Los Mares.  The posters feature the artwork of four San Clemente High School students who participated in TUPP’s “Tune Out Tobacco” billboard project.  The student’s artwork was chosen from more than 100 entries as best in countering the positive portrayal of tobacco in movies, television, billboards, magazines and store advertising.  Their original designs showcase the negative side effects of tobacco, which was selected through a contest held by TUPP’s “Back that Ash Up” youth coalition.

The “Tune Out Tobacco” project provides youth in grades 6 through 12 with the opportunity to make a positive impact on the entertainment and advertising industries through the development of innovative media products.

The goal of the County’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program is to reduce tobacco use and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in Orange County by working with local community organizations and committed individuals.  TUPP provides services to Orange County residents through its youth, community service and public policy programs.  For more information, please call the TUPP program at (714) 541-1444.
