Buckle Up Orange County (BUOC)
The Buckle Up Orange County (BUOC) Program provides training and
resources for professionals who are interested in the safe
transport of children in motor vehicles. BUOC collaborates with
other agencies and community groups
throughout the county to educate the public about misuse and
nonuse of child safety restraints. The Program also awards car
seat mini-grants to community organizations offering educational
and/or pre-natal services to low-income residents of Orange
County. Additionally, Ana Merk, the BUOC coordinator is a member,
of the Orange County Child Passenger Safety Task Force that
includes members from the law enforcement, health care, and public
health fields. The Task Force is devoted to protecting child
passengers and conducts community outreach events such as car seat
checks. Interested community members can call the Child Passenger
Safety Announcement Line for referrals on no cost car seats and
car seat check up events

Bicycle Helmet "Mini-Grants"
The CDIP program awards bicycle helmets to selected organizations
that, in turn, offer them at no cost to low-income families. Each
year, ten organizations in Orange County will be selected as
"mini-grant" recipients. Selected
organizations will receive the
following resources: up to 400 bicycle helmets, bicycle safety
materials, technical assistance, and training in bicycle safety
education. Organizations will be responsible for providing bicycle
safety education and one-on-one helmet fitting to low-income
families and children. Schools, law enforcement agencies, PTA/PTOs,
community-based organizations, health care organizations,
community clinics, and other organizations interested in bicycle
safety are encouraged to apply.
