Walk to School Day

Walk to School Day video is also available in Spanish and Vietnamese.

Walk to School Day.  Walk with purpose.

Join thousands of children, families, and communities as they celebrate Walk to School Day around the world!  Every year, on the first Wednesday of October, over thirty countries hold Walk to School Day events.  For many, it is the kickoff to walking and biking all-year long.

Why walk to school?

Walking is FUN!
Walking to school is an opportunity for students and families to socialize and start the day off with enthusiasm.  Walk to School Day also builds connections between students, families, school staff, and the community.

Walking encourages safety
It’s an opportunity to reinforce safe pedestrian skills and encourage walking in groups. Walking in groups reduces parents’ safety concerns and increases their children’s independence.

Walking promotes physical activity
Walking to and from school is one of the easiest ways to get daily physical activity that kids need to be healthy.

Walking is good for learning
Research shows that walking helps overall learning (Source: Activing Living Research).  Students show up to class alert and ready to learn.

Walking helps reduce traffic congestion
More kids walking means fewer cars on the road.  Fewer cars on the road results in less traffic congestion around the school zone and neighborhood. Parents enjoy driving less.
